For Shanghai, I emulated a chinese ink painting style, with light washes and a very subtle hint of the famous skyline, reminiscient of paintings of mountain landscapes. The foreground is a more natural looking area using muted greens and a touch of color. When I first moved to Shanghai, in 2016, we were warned about the chronic air quality, being advised to wear n95 masks every day. I think it may have been over a year of being in the city before i saw a blue sky and it was common to see the skyline shrouded in a yellowish mist. The switcharound has been remarkable in a short period as the pollution has reduced in the city and a real effort has been made to restore much needed actual jungle to the concrete jungle.
There's obviously a very long way to go as there is still significant waste in the current lifestyle but there are tangible signs that changes are being made which is encouraging (I wish China would put limits on packaging in takeway and fruit logistics, it's crazy at times)
